HSPC Service - Philippians: How to be Good and Anxious, Mark McHugh

  • Harrison Square Presbyterian Church 1227 Harrison Avenue Centralia, WA, 98531 United States (map)

Ours is an age of increasingly high anxiety. Conservatively, over 60 million Americans live with anxiety of some kind. In 2024, the number of US adults experiencing increased anxiety was 43%-- up from 37% in 2023, and 32% in 2022. Simultaneously, Gen Z Americans report higher rates of anxiety than any generation prior.

Often in the Church, we have not known what to say about anxiety. The message has generally been that anxiety and worry are a sign of a person’s lack of faith or adequate trust in God. But Paul seems to offer a different message. In Paul’s mind, anxiety is not a problem to be solved, as much as it is a tool to point us back to God. Join us this Sunday as we study Philippians 4:4-9, and discover together “How to be Good and Anxious,” how anxiety is a sacred wound, and how to recover ancient practices that can lead us ever-deeper into God’s peace. See you Sunday!

With love,

Mark
