Open Hands: You Are an Important Part of the Team!, Ralph Carr

On Sunday we will continue the sermon series on “Open Hands”. If you didn’t hear Pastor Mark’s powerful sermon last Sunday, I encourage you to go to harrisonsquarepc.org and listen to it.

I will talk about stewarding our talents. I will comment on what it means to steward something. My sermon title is: “You Are an Important Member of the Team!”. The scripture will be I Corinthians 12:4-27 (a modified version of NLT). Among other things it says that each of us is given abilities by the Holy Spirit. What abilities, talents, or gifts has the Spirit given you? How are you using them to further the kingdom of God? What is your sense of the Holy Spirit in you? According to the passage, for our congregation to fulfill our entire God given mission, each of us is to steward the abilities the Spirit has given to each of us.

I am looking forward to worshiping and fellowshipping with you on Sunday.

Blessings, Ralph

Open Hands: Treasure What Lasts, Mark McHugh

This Sunday, we start a new four week series on stewardship, as we’ll address the invitation from Jesus and Paul to live with Open Hands. Specifically, this Sunday, we’ll talk about money, and stewarding all the financial resources that God has given us. It can be a tricky subject as so many people have past experiences of being hurt by how a church handles money, and in particular, giving. I am very sympathetic to those who have negative experiences in this regard. Last week, I saw a viral video of a woman who was publicly reprimanded and shamed by her megachurch pastor for not bringing a large enough gift forward during the offering time. Jesus, of course, would have nothing to do with this posture of leadership.

For Jesus and Paul, the invitation is not to balance a church budget (nice as that might be), but to see money and stewardship as a primary way that our inner life is shaped and formed to live in the kingdom of God, or not. In other words, what we do with our money says everything about what we treasure most in our hearts.

Before church this Sunday read Matthew 6:19-24 and 1 Corinthians 16:1-3. And together, this Sunday, we’ll grow as a church of the open hand.

With love,

Mark

Enchanted: Living in a One-Story Universe? w/ Steve Van Atta

Enchanted: Living in a One-Story Universe? w/ Steve Van Atta

What's your response to this statement from Orthodox priest Stephen Freeman?

We live here on earth, the first floor, where things are simply things and everything operates according to normal, natural laws, while God lives in heaven, upstairs, and is largely removed from the story in which we live.

Do you disagree and laugh it off? Agree? Or, land somewhere in between?

Freeman's assertion is one we'll consider Sunday morning, when we look at how our view of reality colors everything - including how we see God, ourselves, and others. Whether we know it or not, we tend to see ourselves as in either a one-story world [where God is always here among us, always revealing and advancing the Kingdom] or a two-story model [where God is an occasional presence, but we're more or less on our own].

See you soon,

Steve
